Meditation is a mental technique which involves focusing the mind on an object, sound, prayer, breathing, or conscious thought, in order to increase our awareness of the present moment, helping us to relax, reduce stress or enhance spiritual or personal growth.
It is also a therapy with a sound scientific basis.
If one examines the positive effects of meditation on our mood system, we find that it increases activity in our serotonin and dopamine cables, calms our noradrenaline cable and increases the supply of ‘feel-good’ endorphins in the brain.
Meditation reduces our heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate, with major positive effects on mental and physical health.
Meditation has an important place in the treatment of illnesses like depression as part of an overall holistic package, and is perhaps an underrated therapy.
